Your "coyote leg trap" is called a double coil spring trap, Your "pad or flap" is called a pan, What you call "leg holders" are jaws, and them "things" are spring levers...Anti's are very unedjucated about traps. In most places these can be leagally placed on public land, and moving them or releasing wild animals caught in them is illeagal. Obviouly a trapper that had no respect or knowledge on trapping place that trap there, Most trappers aren't like this and get a bad name from just a few...

Traps are cruel and I have studies/monitored/stalked their forums and traps DO cause blood, flesh damage etc.
Trapping is considered not fair chase and most trappers are fat as pig and unfit.
They often club/stomp/stack animals in dispatching. Many don't post video because is cruel many trappers are mentally violent and unstable such as being very alarmist, overreactive etc.

I'm well aware of the legality. Call me a vigilanty then. I only pinch the ones I find in USFS roadways, where they are more easily ATV-accessible I can only surmise, or if they are un-tagged. Both of which are illegal. This accounts for 95% of traps I find. And in all my years of hiking and hunting, I've never seen a padded trap in use, though I know they exist. Further proof that too many trappers are lazy and cruel. Padded traps less effective, perhaps?

If trapping requires no skill, set a trap and let me know how successful you are.
With today's rubber padded traps, the animals foot is merely held, and the circulation is NOT cut off from the body.
and you know it is illegal to disturb the traps of someone who has placed them with the use of a trapping lisence.

Trapping takes as much skill as is required to not slam your own damn hand in the thing, and it's hardly a sport. Get a rifle, you lazy excuse for a sportsman. And the only invalid opinions are those born of shortsightedness [ in regars to the use of our finite natural resources] and ignorance [to the actual beneficial activities of the Sierra Club]. But by all means, keep it up. I'm well on my way to filling a 150-foot mine shaft with the things.
Footholds aren't designed to hurt the animal. They are meant to temporarily restrain the animal. It doesn't do as much damage as you'd think.

I appreciate your comment, but respectfully disagree. I was there. My dog make a noise unlike anything I'd ever heard before, and it haunts me to this day. It was not a whine or a bark or a howl. She was screaming in pain. Her foot bled. The vet said he'd just euthanized another dog who'd been trapped. But my biggest gripe is that this was on public land. A child could have stepped into it. Trapping is an outdated and dangerous form of animal control. It needs to be abolished.

the point is to catch coyotes which kill anything from kittens and dogs, like yours, to even full grown deer. coyotes need to be harvested so they don't overpopulate. by law traps need to be checked at least once a day. it is a shame your dog got trapped nobody wants to trap a dog.

I've hiked with my dogs for many years and never been threatened by coyotes. But thanks to this very unpleasant encounter, i HAVE been threatened by coyote traps. These hideous devices have no place on public land.

She's a trooper, bounced right back to her cheerful happy self. Thank goodness! It would have broken my heart if this had dampened her spirit.
