Allow me the opportunity, every now and then, to take myself too seriously...after all, it's a heck of a lot of fun.

I love this poem because it is so modern. Arnold was supposedly on his honeymoon when he wrote it, sometime in the mid 1800's - whether before or after Darwin's grand publication, I don't know if anyone can ever say.

But it's a fine bit of brilliantly conceived and executed, historically situated, dramatically human and poetic, intuition.

The inscrutable struggle must go on.

And go on, I would hope, somewhat naively, gladly optimistic...for good reason.
