Researchers at the University of Calgary are the first to discover the genes responsible for codeine and morphine production in the opium poppy, opening the door to new ways of making important pain-killing drugs.
If history is any guide this may be bad news for small grower & enthusiast. Once genes cultivated in other organic material it will be "owned" as intellectual property & become the exclusive domain of a corporation or drug company. Next comes alteration/destruction of "natural" forms as was done in Tasmania and Australia. Now may be the time to establish heirloom seed banks for poppies. May the architects of America's War on Drugs rot, get black spots, worms and spend eternity in a compost heap.
