Fort William Murals & Historic Storyboards Unveiled
December 10, 2008 The City of Thunder Bay is pleased to announce the completion of two Downtown Fort William renewal projects the Downtown Public Murals Project and the Historic Storyboards Project.
The five public murals provided by City grants have been completed and were formally unveiled today for public viewing. Additionally, five storyboards featuring a unique story and images of a particular Thunder Bay historic building or event were also unveiled today in highly visible outdoor locations. The five murals and storyboards bring together public art, history and community pride in Downtown Fort William.
The location and themes of these murals are as follows:
•Shelter House, 400 George St (at Simpson St) on the diversity mutual respect of our multi-cultural community,
•Métis Nation of Ontario, 226 May St. S, role of Métis peoples in the Fur Trade era,
•Victorias Cupboard, 119 May St. N, Fort William vignettes circa 1880s - 1910s,
•Veggie Garden Project, 443 Simpson St, Simpson St. streetscapes circa 1870s 1910s, and
•Kleewyck Stained Glass, 601 Simpson St, geometric shapes with historical family figures.
The historic storyboards pilot project includes five themes:
•the Streetcar Era (located on the corner of Brodie Street and Victoria Avenue, outside the east entrance to Victoriaville Centre),
•Historic Victoria Avenue Street Scenes (located on the corner of Victoria Avenue & Simpson Street),
•the Kam Rivers Industrial Past (inside Kam River Park),
•the 10-Mile Road Race (in front of the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame), and
•the changing face of City Hall (temporarily located in front of the Sports Hall of Fame while City Hall renovations are being completed).
The purpose of these storyboards, designed by Tory Tronrud, Director - Thunder Bay Historical Museum, is to raise interest and awareness of Thunder Bays local history. Both the murals and the storyboards have incredible visual appeal, said Tronrud. They combine the creativity of this community with our unique culture and identity, resulting in an attraction that everyone can enjoy.
Each of the five storyboards are within easy walking distance of each other, and when combined with the murals and the downtowns stock of historic buildings, offer an interesting and colourful downtown walking tour.
Great vid! I seen it on ThunderBayBuzz(dot)com which showcases Thunder Bay news, tweets, sports, Thunder Bay classifieds and entertainment. Really cool site that is showing Thunder Bay videos!
