TAMPA -- Chamberlain will play in a Class 5A region final for the second straight season, thanks to a 42-21 semifinal win over Wharton on Nov. 28.
The Chiefs (11-1) held a slim 21-14 halftime lead before breaking the game open with 21 unanswered points in the third quarter. They will play at Lakeland on Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. with a state berth at stake.
Wharton (9-3) had not lost since the second week of the regular season. The Wildcats won nine consecutive games after an 0-2 start and had dedicated recent games to the late Earl Goodman, the team's defensive coordinator who died Nov. 8 of an apparent heart attack.
As has been the case all season, senior quarterback Dontae Aycock led the Chiefs. The Division 1 prospect, who had 203 combined yards, passed for three touchdowns and ran for another
In the third quarter, Aycock ran for a 27-yard touchdown and threw scoring passes to Anthony Williams, his second of the game, and Lamont Scott.
Chamberlain also controlled the ball with a solid running game that was led by Kenny Allen, who gained 144 yards and had two touchdown runs.
Wharton's defense did not roll over and forced three fumbles, but Chamberlain's defense countered with three interceptions and a sack.
