True, but don't you think its strange that this ribbon will destroys ships but leaves organic material completely unharmed? The explanation the movie gives just raises more questions.

But even if we accept that it destroys ships but not flesh, I'd say it would still be easier to just get a shuttle, get into a space suit, and have the shuttle drop him off ahead of the Nexus and just wait a few minutes for the Nexus. Still would have been cheaper, quicker, and less complex.
