This video documentary will present a detailed look at the use of new social media in the Middle East, and its ability to democratize the region. Social media and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, are used by millions of people all over the world. It is the democratic and accessible nature of such networking sites that makes them so popular. People are able to say whatever they want, whenever they want, without having to worry about any social or political restrictions.
As a consequence, social networking sites have been used in countries where mass media are heavily monitored and censored by the government. Individuals are able to express themselves freely. The events of Iran on June 16th 2009, will be referenced to help illustrate this point.
To what extent, however, does a countries use of social media, encourage its government to stop its oppressive mass media practices? This question will be answered through reference to several textual sources. The conclusion will be drawn that the use of social media at least raises the possibility of moving a country towards a media democracy. It does so by placing the oppressive media practices of the government in the international spotlight.
Almost perfect!
