These lyrics, to me, come off too much like weak poetry; very indirect and image-laden. Sounds more like a wanky break-up song than something deeper.

Cashing in? Hardly. The man makes juuust enough money to do what he does.
Read his interviews. Listen to Moorestown, listen to Summer Dress, listen to The Light. He wants to pay tribute to her.
It's probably true that he was a hard man to live with, but I can't believe this is what started her illness.

If it's any recourse, the song is rather apologetic in tone. I think Mark knew he was the last person anyone should be in a relationship with. He talks about this in other songs as well, especially on the album Down Colorful Hill. I'm not defending him, but he sounds pretty remorseful here. The guy has had a hard life, and it's left some deep scars that you can't see on the surface. I'm deeply sorry about your family's loss though.

oh, what a great song it`s so beautiful and amazing. i wasn't be able to quit listenig to this song. i thought i listened to it more than 12 times in a row. all in this song is beautiful, the lyrics, the voice, makes me feel a sensation umbelievable it ain't be described by words. Siempre he adorado este grupo desde que me tope con songs for a blue gitar.
para los nostalgicos pueden escuchar Sun Kil Moon o las canciones de Mark en solitario pero no son lo mismo aunque son fantasticas.

It´s hard to describe what this song does to you when you hear it...His voice shows the beauty of melancholy and bittersweetness (...of longing for someone). This song is so genuine that it makes one feel what he goes through. The truly beautiful things in life can never be expressed in conversations but in music like this.

creative people can be the most difficult to deal with on a personal level, they seem to lack the ability.
Einstein was, by all accounts, a abysmal father to his kids and a terrible husband, but he seemed to love humanity as a whole even though he couldn't relate to people one-to-one.
I saw RHP three times, and Mark was quite rude in between songs, a real contrast to the beauty displayed in the music. At least Katy's memory will live on for so many in this lovely piece of music
