Proudly Closed Captioned. Adam Barrera at highmileage.org reviews the 2010 GMC Terrain SLT compact crossover and places it in the context of its competition. 24x7: http://twitter.com/highmileage The GMC Terrain is the perfect picture of a compact crossover, but not for default reasons.

You won't find clever cargo management solutions

like the Dodge Journey's in-seat and in-floor storage.

Cargo space and passenger volume measurements lie comfortably mid-pack. And that's fine.

No vehicle in this segment will leave families craving space.

The base cloth interior's fashion-savvy high-contrast upholstery

might feel more premium than this tester's leather swatches,

and color-coordinated LED lighting through the center stack

makes this the classiest compact crossover at night.

But that's not how the GMC Terrain advances the science of crossovers.

Its navitainment system and powertrain are simply the most advanced on the market.

A well-done navitainment system isn't just convenient

it helps reduce driver distraction.

The Terrain's display employs every pixel as efficiently as possible,

combining firm-coded radio presets with panels that can split radio and navigation information when necessary.

OnStar is still the smartest suite of telematics in the business.

No other system can automatically transmit physical crash statistics to emergency services personnel, or stop a stolen vehicle that poses a public hazard.

Most technology in the Terrain is literally state-of-the art.

However, the Bluetooth system relies on cell phones' internal voice recognition, and cannot directly download a cellular directory.

Under the hood, there are no caveats.

The GMC Terrain and its Chevrolet Equinox brother

are the only vehicles in the segment with naturally aspirated

direct-injection four-cylinder engines.

The high-tech approach makes this one of the most advanced

regular-production four-cylinder engines in any car ever produced.

The 2.4-liter motor provides just enough power to transport any team and their gear

without excessive complaint.

A console-mounted eco button carefully manages the transmission's response to throttle input.

Use that button, and it's easy to reach federal fuel economy estimates.

The Terrain can travel up to 32 miles per gallon on the highway.

That's better highway mileage than Honda, Toyota, and even the Ford Escape Hybrid.

A standard rear-view camera and strong safety ratings will attract small families.

But the GMC Terrain's clever navitainment system and world-leading powertrain

should capture the attention of enthusiasts.
