French wines are a symbol of the French way of life. When Germany occupied France the occupation troops, had appointed a person to run their buying organization, a person you could call their Weinfürer. They didn't just send any old soldier or officer to go and requisition so many hectolitres of wine. They tried to send specialists, people who already knew the region well and knew what was possible, perhaps because they'd already worked in the region and could use their contacts. There was some looting in the first few weeks, but as soon as Otto Klaebisch arrived in Champagne, the looting stopped immediatly. First reaction of German's in 1940 was to grab it all. As Goering said: „Take whatever you can get your hands on"...
