It was great that you let this nest go. Wasps are not out to get people and whenever I do a job I advise removal as a last resort (they can even be relocated without being killed). These look like D. arenaria (aerial yellowjacket). They have a shorter season completing their cycle by late August.
Once again you have an awesome attitude about these fascinating insects.

@herc1120 I find them very fascinating and I enjoy just standing there and watching them work their nest. It is very cool, how they can build such things

not to be a jerk, but i think those are hornets, wasps are much bigger and usually a brownish black color. regardless, that is a huge nest
