I was a bit amused by the rating of the sitarist...!!!! It's funny. I was always enchanted by the tremendous "medha", brilliance of Pt Ravi Shankar. He did not have the speed, which Vilayet ji had. But for a same raag, Ravi ji will creat the picture in 10 mins, which Vilayet ji will do in >20 mins. Also Ravji made a place table where it was equal, as opposed to Vilayet ji, to whom it should be merely an accompaniment.

@JoelvanLennep : The picture is only odd in the sense that it must have taken before vocalist Ustad Amir Khan's divorce from his first wife, Zeenat, who was the sister of the sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan. They broke off completely after Ustad Amir Khansaheb married again! And of course who wouldn't be scorched to smithereens standing next to the veritable SUN himself? As they said about Sir Isaac Newton, it bears to be said about Pandit Ravi Shankar: he couldn't be hidden even in disguise!

i think it is equally just 2 pay respect of pt.ravi shankar..... while u utter his name............u had called ustadji as vilayatji...isnt it? at least try and respct the person whose name pops up everytime u think... u play.... or listen sitar "the instrument" recitals....+

Rather odd - but that is the great singer, Amir Khansahib depicted in the photo w/ Vilayat Khansahib. But the music really does sound like him with Ali Akbar Khansahib. Shahid Parvez uses this same gat, but not as brilliantly as here - usually Shahidbhai is tops, however. (He and Shujaat.) Notice in the second photo how uncomfortable Vilayatji looks with Ravi - ever the showman!
