Yes, they eat the food in your inventory and replace it.

remember how they used to grow and shrink in beta?

it exist some tribble to selfheal out of battle and 3 can buff you .. but you must "create" a lot of this to become buff tribbles^^

Now you just need to find a space station to sell the buggers to.

Well, i now play the game and have become a breeder. they dont just heal you, they can buff you in all sorts of ways. There is a lot more to tribbles than was once thought.

they should give combat bonuses against klingons

This sit in your inventory and slowly breed - filling up your inventory until you throw the little brats out into the harsh vacuum of space.
