Could be on the brink of something big here as Moody used to bribe local townspeople to join the loyalist cause with British gold that was believed to have been lost in the tunnels near Devils Cavern in Muckshaw ponds on 206 while fleeing pursuing Patriots
The Old Newton Cemetery in the middle of downtown Newton has also been believed to contain entrances via collapsed tombs. Old tax records of the town dated back to the early 1800s link several founding fathers (also known members of the free masons) to a complex and intricate system of forgotten blue prints that map the tunnels. These blue prints were believed to have burned in a structure fire of a tavern near the present-day town green. Any other info. please post.
James Moody, a known loyalist, had used these tunnels during the American Revolution after sacking the old court house in downtown Newton in an attempt to free fellow captured loyalists. There are believed to be several entrances to the tunnels and the one Moody used is supposedly in the woods of the new Newton Cemetery. The abandoned rail road station holds another and the old Presbyterian church across from Mc Guire auto holds another.
Recently it has come to my attention that there are a system of lost underground catacombs that run all along the older parts of Newton. These tunnels were believed to have been artificially expanded off of natural tunnels that were created due to a water spring that made its way down the center of town (Spring Street).
ah newton, most of my life was spent in this hellhole...only in nj will you find a playground built on top of an old landfill next to the sewage treatment plant and behind a scrapyard...
