  • When is the right time to harvest hops, I am in Lancashire UK, [quite far north!], Last year had a good crop but they went mouldy. I think I left them too long and did not dry them properly.

  • @airscrew1 Thanks very much mate. I'll get it and have a look at it.

  • @Faighbas I can recommend a good book to get you started. It's called Brew Your Own Real Ale by Roger Wheeler. Tells you everything you need to know with tons of recipes. It's just been reprinted and updated and you can get it on amazon.

  • @airscrew1 Professional alcoholic! lol! I'd prefer the term professional beer lover, as I'm one myself! :-)

  • @airscrew1 The live yeast may have been contaminated with foriegn microorganisms from the air or elsewhere once the bottle had been opened. I'd guess that the use of dried yeast derived from a pure culture produces more predictable results though. I'm no expert on brewing. But I am Studying chemistry and microbiology in college. If the brew had been exposed to UV light, it would also alter the chemical composition of the brew and produce off flavours or if a lager yeast had been used at ale temp

  • @Faighbas Well that was the first time it went wrong. I usually use packet dried yeast but this time I cultivated the yeast from a bottle of Fullers ale. as it had live yeast in it. It went really well and fermented properly it was just the awful smell that made me bin it. By the way if you brew your own it will turn you into a professional alcoholic like me :o)

  • @airscrew1 Sorry to hear about your last batch!

Well, I'll give it a try in the next few weeks!

It seems like it might be a lot of fun and a good hobbie!

  • @Faighbas No it's dead easy as long as you take precautions with sterilising your equipment. I've been brewing for years but my last batch went funny. Smelt of sulphur so I lost the whole lot.

  • @airscrew1 I'm thinking of brewing my own!

    Is it hard?

  • AB/Budwieser has their own hops, based on Czech "Saaz" Hops. They would what we would call Sazzer hops. I want to dive into that pile and roll around!!! I bet it smells like Heaven.
