Dalai Lama Visits European Parliament

The European Parliament gave the Dalai Lama a warm welcome last week on his trip to Europe. A planned meeting between the religious leader and French president Nicolas Sarkozy prompted China to call off Monday's long-awaited summit with the European Union.

STORY:
In his address to the European Parliament, the Dalai Lama expressed his commitment to the promotion of human values and inter-religious harmony.

He said he wishes to follow a non-violent approach toward autonomy for the Tibetan people, but many of his words are being distorted by communist propaganda.

[Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]:
Actually the whole world knows we are not separatists, and also many Chinese writers and also many Chinese students. When they have the opportunity to know the reality they are all very supportive. And in fact very critical about their government policy. However the Chinese government still accuses us of being separatists. Actually we ourselves confused.

The Dalai Lama says that Chinese authorities are suspicious of every one of his moves and think that they are politically motivated.

[Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]:
With great suspicion every one of my movement. Even if I drink some water, I think the Chinese looks some political significance, too much, too much.

In contrast to the Chinese regimes continued rigid attitude towards Tibet, there are some Chinese, especially among the educated circles, who are beginning to think critically about the plight of the Tibetan people.

The Dalai Lama says that even the most patriotic Chinese know they will have to improve on a moral level in order to become a superpower.

[Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]:
Now, one important sort of factor that is moral authority, that is lacking. The image of the People's Republic of China because very, very poor record of human rights and religious freedom and the freedom of expression and also the freedom of free media. Too much censorship, too much censorship.

The European Parliament president responded to the Chinese delegation canceling its visit to Europe.

[Hans-Gert Pöttering; President, European Parliament]:
"There should not be conditions for the negotiations and discussions, between the European Union and China. If we would make conditions we would be behaving a little bit like the Chinese, canceling or suspending a meeting, so this would be the same level, and not advisable."

The President hopes there will be a summit between the European Union and China in the near future--one that will include the question of Tibet.

Meanwhile, the Dalai Lama says he is looking forward to meeting French president Sarkozy in Poland on December 6.

If Tibet were China, Chinese visas would work there. However, they don't.

If Tibet were China, Tibetan citizens could travel abroad like Chinese citizens do. However, they can't.

These outbursts of violence by the Uighers and the Tibetans are the result of tensions caused by these people feeling :

1) Their culture is being eroded by the influx of Han settlers,

2) Resentment that they are being economically and culturally marginalized in their own ancestral land,

3) Treated as second-class citizens and discriminated against by the majority Han Chinese.
