The McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica are ice-free oases in an otherwise frozen desert. Within these valleys are a series of lakes covered by ice all year around, with ice up to 20 feet thick. Scientist Dale Andersen gets ready to dive in Lake Hoare next to the Canada Glacier in Taylor Valley.
