I sign of servitude to your friends, and in rememberance of jesus. So it is a form or the tradition, but modified by the messiah with deeper and different meaning.

Those interpretations are specifically from the Talmud, which is older than the new testament itself. Among these traditions is hand and foot washing (which Jesus did) and the oral story of Enoch, which saint Jude mentions.
