i play first base right now, but everything he says is so obvious. and i dont think there is problem of reaching out and catching a ground ball and toss it the pitcher covering first, instead of making the 2nd baseman fielding the ground ball.
In that instance, go to first base and wait for the throw. Now as far as a ground ball to first, if you want to try and turn a double play, check the runner and BE SURE you can get the out, if there's ANY doubt, take the ball to first and get a sure out.
As a coach, my number one rule when you hit a ground ball is...
RUN IT OUT!! Hustle down the line. I don't care if you have no chance of making it, hustle, it may hurry the fielder and force an over throw and walla you're on second, etc.
secondly: Yes as a first baseman you should be able to scoop bad hops, but as in the stretch if you must, come off the bag. I'd rather my player come off the bag and save a run than to try and stretch for it and miss and allow one or maybe more runs to score.
Third: Double plays. This is not limited to only first base. First baseman don't need to know how to make or turn double plays as in like a second baseman or shortstop. ..
Okay, first of all, yes this guy is teaching different ways of playing 1st base. It does not mean all of it is wrong. Though I will say that I was taught to go between first and the pitcher to cut a throw form right field.
But there are more than three things a first baseman needs to remember. The three you mentioned are only a few aspects. However, the stretch: I don't care what level you're at HS, College, Pros, etc If the throw is wide and you must come off the bag, come off the bag...
He is wrong second baseman cut throws from right field and firstbaseman stay between first and pitcher only to cut throw from right field if there is not chance to get runner com ing from third to home and then he would get the chence having the ball to get runners on first trying to go to second base if the runners tries to advance to second in throw too home plate.
omg this guy is an idiot...."and thats just about all the resposabilities of a first baseman". ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha thanks for summing it all up for us first baseman dude. ha ha ha ha. I cant wait to watch how to be a catcher. HA HA HA HA HA
