The Kent County Lunatic Asylum was opened in 1833 at a site on Barming Heath just outside of Maidstone.
The photos in this collection compare how the original building (St Andrew's House) looked after standing derelict for many years with how it looks now after being converted into residential use.
With thanks to Oxford Archaeology for most of the black & white photos.
And with thanks to David Bowie, who provides the music.

i love to see the remodels of these historical buildings. Im so glad that they converted it and didn't destroy it completely!!! and the song went very well with the video!

Wow, cant believe this place has changed so much, I used to go exploring in here as a kid back in the eighties when it was derelict. Nice video!

What a great video. I live in the converted Oakwood hospital (St. Andrews Park) and it's fantastic to see how it has changed for the better. It's good to remember how things have changed and a reminder of our historical surroundings.

Thanks for the comment! Two of the buildings from the old hospital (the "St Andrew's House" block and the "Queens House" block) have been converted into residential use. These were the two oldest buildings and are both listed. The other buildings were demolished.
