The Wonderboys told us that they needed to have some type of homemade instruments to take to school and play. I told them to get an idea and we would get to work.
Well, the Drumming Wonderboy saw a very cool video of Dennis Havlena playing his homemade PVC version of a Swiss Hang Drum (in the spirit of Blue Man Group) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5dD4KkJcAw on Youtube.
I found Dennis' web site and followed his great instructions to make this.
I gave it to the lad and within 5 minutes he was playing like he had been doing it for ages.
I love the sound of this!
He will be taking it into the music room to put beside his drums.
What an amazing idea! Huge thanks to Dennis for sharing his brilliance. You should see everything he does. http://www.ehhs.cmich.edu/~dhavlena/

  • mahalo for responding to me question....but what kind of tuner did you use????...

  • @forestfairness The best tuner on the market that money can buy. My ear. :D

Well, plus his brother's electric piano. It was only for a school project so fine tuned precision wasn't high on my list of priorities.

  • sounds good, i saw the same design on youtube, got the parts to make one, but got stuck on how to tune it????....i have a digital guitar tuner, but it will not pick up the sound from the tubes....how did you tune it????...happy drumming, forest

  • @forestfairness Tuning isn't possible once the tubes are cut. I cut them a little longer than the instructions said and trimmed in very small increments until it was right. Fortunately I did not cut any too long and have to start a new tube.

  • yea try sumthn bigger for sticks u need flipflops or sumthn it will allow more air to be pushed thru the pipes and as the air flows it hits and bounces of the inner pipe walls which is what creates its sound

  • @ShadowDeus You're absolutely right. I did cut a pair of flip flops after I did this video but didn't record a new one. It sounded much better. The instrument is broken right now I'm afraid. I should have used thicker plywood for the parts that hold the tubes in place.

  • put a couple piezzo transducer pickups on it and put it through some effects. it'll sound ridiculous, trust me.

  • tell me when the cd comes out man

  • Vivitar you're right but not in this video.

He used plastic spatulas in this. After I recorded this I found some flip flops and cut them.

It sounded far better but unfortunately I didn't get another video before the instrument met an untimely fate. :(

    I'll reassemble it some day.

  • i think he yoused a pair of flip flops not kitchen spoons
