C'mon Anna, you can't let something as mundane as a toilet beat you! If it's the type of toilet I think it is, then you need to grab the handle; turn/push it down clockwise until you can't turn/push it down any further; hold it in place until the tank/cistern empties completely, then release the handle(it should return to it's starting position on it's own)
