United Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania refers to a series of acts and alliances between the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania that lasted for prolonged periods of time and led to the creation of the PolishLithuanian Commonwealth—the "Republic of the Two Nations"—in 1569 and eventually to the creation of a short-lived unitary state in 1791.

The most important acts in the process of union were:
* 1385 Union of Krewo— a personal union that brought Grand Duke of Lithuania Jogaila to Polish throne;
* 1401 Union of Vilnius and Radom reassured sovereignty of Grand Duchy of Lithuania;
* 1413 Union of Horodło - heraldic union, that granted many szlachta rights to Lithuanian nobility;
* 1432 (143234) Union of Grodno a declarative attempt to renew closer union;
* 1499 Union of Kraków and Vilnius personal union turns to dynastic union, recognises sovereignty of Lithuania and sescribes interation between two states;
* 1501 Union of Mielnik - personal union renewed;
* July 1, 1569 Union of Lublin — a real union that resulted in creation of the semi-federal, semi-confedederal Republic of the Two Nations; and
* May 3, 1791 Polish Constitution of May 3, 1791: the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania were abolished, and a common state was created in their place. The changes were modified with the Reciprocal Guarantee of Two Nations that stressed the continuity of bi-national status of the state, and were reversed completely in 1792 under pressure of Russian Empire forces.

  • @LemurekPL everything is possible :)

  • @ke5has I think that it isn't possible and wasn't possible in 20's. GDL was built in completely different times.

  • @LemurekPL sad but youre very right about modern Lithuanian that its not GDL and as ashburokas mentioned it was rebuilt but they rebuilted republic not duchy its kind a confusing for us Lithuanian who are interested in, if this problem would be solved we had no negative discussion between our nations. Greetings

  • Niech żyję Maria Emanuel Wettyn Król Polski! Według praw z Konstytucji 3 maja.

    Long live Maria Emanuel Wettyn the King of Poland! Polish king according to the laws of Constitution of May 3

  • @ashburokas Modern Lithuania isn't that, what GDL used to be. That's your main problem. Heritage of that country was divided between modern Poland, Lithuania and Belarus. Nobility of GDL was polonized, citizens of big cities as well. Modern polish nation was born as nation of Commonwealth. Don't forget that big part of nobility from GDL was ruthenian. Their descendants used to say about them self "gente Ruthenus, natione Polonus".

  • @swoj2011 Sorry, but Lithuania wasn`t createn in 1918, it was rebuilt so to say after tsar occupation and so on... Vilnius was capital of Lithuania Grand Duchy, and yeah we was back then in commonwealth with Poland, but that doesn`t mean that Lithuania Grand Duchy was part of Poland we was union, both countries had their rulers for example Jogaila (Jagiello) and Vytautas (Witold).

  • @geexlt

    Of course there was influance of Polish culture in GDL but also v.v. see some of present food popular in Poland, small Palm (Verba) etc

    I have just visited Malbork, Kraków and Troki/Trakai and see how close we were together for hundred years ! Everything changed before and after WWI however nothing is so simply - see our killed President Garbiel Narutowicz and his died brother (suiside) Stanislovas Narutavičius member of Taryba.

  • @geexlt

    Spa agreement - that was new info for myself - thank you. I agree it was also about Vilnius/Wilno signed just before Battle of Warsaw (as from 12-Aug-1920) - to have more time before final counterattack against Red Army. However Soviets didn't stop Army after The Spa Meeting and no promised military supply from Entente received.

  • @swoj2011 Answer directly from first book I found "...Both Lithuania and Poland campaigned for their rights in the region. However, it seemed that the would become a free city, similar to the Free City of Danzig. Not waiting for an unfavorable decision, the Lithuanians decided to stage the Klaipėda Revolt, take the region by force, and present the Entente with fait accompli. The revolt was carried out in January 1923 while western Europe was distracted by the occupation of the Ruhr...."
