He said I warned "them". SO maybe he warmed people around him about the role and maybe he knew Heath wasn't in the best of shape when filming? I really think Jack was misquoted on this one.

Let me set this straight- He didn't say he warmed him, he said he warmed THEM. He was talking about the pills Heath took. Jack once took the pills Heath had taken and he didn't have a good experience with them.

They didn't laugh because they're assholes, they laughed because they thought it was a joke. It was an awkward situation, and Nicholson didn't say something respectful, so they laughed because they were nervous.
Also, that interviewer sounded a little like Eric Idle.
