"I never really liked this song, and almost tossed it out halfway through the epic making of the I Predict 1990 album. For starters, it presaged an unhealthy obsession with foreign-sounding words that would reach its tragic apex with the naming of an obscure American rock band of which I was a member. The track is too derivative of a certain English pop group, the words are all pomp and no circumstance, and the dreaded live version required my first and last use of the band playing along with a pre-recorded sequencer part on tape. But the album needed a tenth song. And, as fate would have it, 'Svengali' was picked as the first single, necessitating its inclusion here.
In short, skip the song and read the novel."
[From the liner notes of "Now The Truth Can Be Told."]
And he may not like it, but I love it. Ha.
This was always a favorite of mine. As for the poster if he was quoting someone he did not make it clear who said the quote just where the quote came from. I suggest you correct that matter by stating Steve Taylor said " I never really liked........
This would help. ;)

Svengali is on Netflix for online streaming, if anyone is interested in seeing the film.

I'm no fan of President Obama, but I doubt Steve would have put him up there. The images were all of mass murderers and dictators. It's not accurate or charitable to lump Obama in with that set. More likely, we'd have the same images, along with perhaps Hussein or Ahmadenajad.

If Steve were to redo this song today, whose images would he include in the video? I'm just playing a hunch, but I bet one would be President Obama.

I'm kind of curious how posting Steve Taylor's quotes on the song -and then saying that I still liked it- makes me not have a clue. But, uh. Thanks for the comment, I guess? Have a nice day, regardless. :)

As much as I enjoy enjoyed Taylor's cutting edge reality, this video is spiritually strange.

I like the song, I think it's cool! I have yet to read the novel, but I'm familiar with the movie and the evolution of the character's name into modern day language. Funny how that happens.
