Oh, yes definitely. Would love to help you get more exercise! When you're in town, of course. While this vid is a little heavy on the "bearded, overweight, older men" talk, those of use who are older, overweight, bearded women ... wait .. .that didn't come out right.
It was all started by the morris ring - which is men only. However, I know loads of young morris dancers including myself, and a lot of women, which are not recognised by the ring. But on the plus side, it has put morris dancing in the public eye, which is a good thing!
I'm 23 and have been dancing for about 4 years. I find it brilliant and social and energetic!!!!
This is weird - a couple of my friends on Facebook (we're in our thirties) seem to have got involved with Morris Dancing, so it's odd to see it come up here as well. It is good exercise, because it's a jumping dancing style. Morris dancing is definitely an outside, going to a country pub kind of a thing, so if you don't want to be fit you can get drunk. And yeah, Americans do take up our stuff. Letterboxing as a hobby has started up pretty recently in the US as well.
You make a good point about exercise; I think it's good to do such things with people who are roughly the same ability. You can challenge each other without making the whole thing feel hopeless. Also, in my limited experience in Europe, I've noticed that a lot of the things they consider anachronistic tend to be taken up by Americans... Which I think is kinda cool. It makes Ams look a little crazy, but if they enjoy doing these sorts of things, why not? It only helps us all feel more connected.
