Rescuing baby deer with angry mother close by

This morning, I kept hearing the squeak of a fawn, but couldn't see where it was. Eventually, I saw a doe standing by the fence between our yard and the neighbors down the hill, and it was then that I noticed the fawn was on the other side of the fence.

(I could have sworn I saw a second pair of fawn ears down there too, but I had my indoor glasses on, so maybe they were just leaves -- we didn't see or hear another fawn once we got down there. I can't help but wonder if that's what the mama deer is lowering her head to look at in the latter part of the video, and why the rescued fawn seems for a moment to try to crawl back under the fence.)

We decided to stop working and see if we could help the baby get free.

I later heard our next-door neighbor say that he had found a fawn standing in the middle of the street, and had picked it up and left it in the back yard in hopes the mother would find it. It's possible that it was this fawn, and it simply crawled under the fence into the lower neighbor's yard and got trapped.

Unfortunately, with the angry mama deer jumping around and looking potentially aggressive, I couldn't pay attention to where I was pointing the camera most of the time (and usually wasn't looking at where I was pointing it as situational awareness was more important than looking through the camera; I was just holding the camera blindly), so I actually missed the handoff of the fawn over the fence -- and only got the feet of the mama deer much of the time as she jumped around and lunged toward us occasionally.

clap clap you did good job.. The mother was very worried about her baby so you recue fawn and give fawn to mother.. Im sure fawn's mother say thank you and tell fawn lets go .. God bless you.. I read other comment said if you touch fawn and the mother will push fawn away, depend on, like fawn in stuck and no way to get out then the mother will need our help and get fawn then give fawn to mother.. If fawn in hide and safe without stuck, maybe mother push it away, I don't know.. maybe me wrong =)

@mythoughtwhatyousay1 What usually happens in that case is that the fawn is not in the same spot and the mother simply cannot find it again, since the fawn's instinct is to remain silent when it's waiting for its mother. Quite the opposite here, of course; the fawn was making a racket which is how I discovered its predicament in the first place.

@cs231951 Exactly. It slipped beneath the fence on the hill and became trapped in that neighbor's back yard which was completely fenced all the way around.

But no one is suppose to touch a baby dear for the mother wont accept the baby dear back, thats why the mother ran away after smelling the fawn. Now the mother couldnt recognize the baby. Baby dear dont have any scent so preys wont attack it.

@fremy123 That is a common myth. It is not true, however.

She hadn't abandoned it. She was with it at the time we heard its cries. It was trapped behind the fence, having managed to slip underneath. Neither mother nor fawn could reunite without human intervention.
