They're imitating the squirrel because they are treating it as prey. My cat (a rescued abandoned who lived wild for a while) did the same thing for birds nearby my apartment where I found her.

No I beleive they do this when they realize they cant get what they want LoL I have ahad a bunch of cat do this and they always seem to when they see somthing they cant seem to get in other words their whining or somthing lol
