The earlier Danza Españolas date from the last decade of the nineteeth century and were one of the first works to proclaim and establish once and for all the new spirit of the Spanish nationalism. Even so, the Danza Española No. 4 - a Villanesca, is not through with echoes of the Scandinavian Grieg, though the infectious and bucolic gaiety are undeniably Spanis, in particular the finely contrasted middle section - a canzonetta, which is also amazingly classical in outline.
