why does reptile have subzero's ice ball

Because Morttal Kombat 1 Reptile had Scorpion and Sub-Zero's special moves.

To get the custom characters to fight one another, are you able to set the AI option for one of them, or can you only do so with a second player?

Yes, you need two players. There's no way to make the AI use a custom character.

personally i don't believe that reptile should go under boss category only because u had 2 do a certain task just to fight him. he's more like a secret kharacter *comedic drum noise*
