@Hazelrat10 Nowadays people just don't care about the sound quality. It's just kinda like that's good enough. To much emphasis is put on making it smaller at the cost of quality. Going digital is fine, even desirable but why not get great sound out of a unit just slightly larger or a unit that doesn't hold as many songs. You think I am going nostalgic. No, I like technology,just miss being able to catch the subtle details in music & hearing it in a really high quality format. That's all

@Hazelrat10 lol CD's? That was the first step backwards on sound quality. Don't get me wrong CD"s were great & had huge advantages when they came out & I would never want to go back to vinyl but clean vinyl with brushes & a good needle has notably better sound. Running that through a multi band equalizer you can tinker to get that perfect sound for you. All I am saying is I wish sound quality was put before compact size & convience. With todays tech we could get amazing sound if we wanted to.

@shananagans5 But you can still buy great speaker systems for your home today. Really the only area where sound quality has significantly declined is the source. MP3/MP4 uses a large amount of compression, if you want the best sound quality it's best to get your music not digitally but through a CD. Yet CD's are still relatively common, used in (as you said) home speaker systems and wherever else you might want to see a speaker system. It's not outdated technology, no need to spew out nostalgia.

@Hazelrat10 Thing is, in the 70s & 80s you expected things to last. It wasn't uncommon to have a 10 yr old home stereo with an equalizer that worked perfectly. It also cost more than stuff today but It also sounded better. That's actually my only real gripe. No need to make & pay for something to last 10+yrs when the new technology comes out in 2. I just wish sound quality was viewed as important again. Old Walkmans didn't sound good but home systems back then sounded so much better.

@shananagans5 Life was simpler when we lived in caves and threw shit at each other for entertainment. Innovations like smartphones (though there are some drawbacks to them, just as there were drawbacks to the first Sony Walkmans/Cellphones/computers/
etc) improve the simplicity of things. As a rule today everything still works pretty well, you just have to fork out the cash for the better technology, just as you did back then.The only difference is price (justified b/c it replaces so many things) -
keep it another 50 yrs nd sell it for $100,000

The only source of portable music players that surpasses both an iPod and walkman will always be a discman/CD player. However, a walkman definitely has alittle better advantage as you can play both the radio and your own music i.e. cassettes, but the only major problem is once the cassettes are played too much the tape breaks. iPod's only best advantage is it fits better in your pocket. Either way I went from walkmans throughout the 90s to discman from 98-06 to iPods 07-current.

One thing I must say about older electronis vs newer stuff. The old stuff was easy to use. It was obvious and simple. Each item did one thing. A phone was a phone, a stereo was a stereo. As a rule everything worked pretty well although it was limited in what it did. It was rare for something to break or malfunction right after you get it. It is like these days they are pushing to fast to release the new product and will work the bugs out later. LOL Life was simpler just 25 yrs ago. I miss it !!
