Weight Bearing is good for O/A you need to build muscle so this takes the Strain off bone on bone. The less exercise you do the more pain you will get.
I am a seventy year old powerlifter, i was diagnosed needing knee replacements three years ago because of loss of cartilage because of osteoarthritis. I was told not to squat or do any load bearing exercises just as you are saying. However, I continued to do squats, leg extensions and also deadlifting and found that far from causing me problems they have enabled me to keep strong and healthy. I actually have less pain when I have done them than before i started, so it works for me.
Please understand that padded running shoes only serve to support bad form in running... knees shouldn't receive much impact if you are landing on the ball of your foot as opposed to heel strike running. Barefoot running is key to strengthening the muscles of the leg that help to prevent arthritic pain, if running can be tolerated at all. Of course, I am not a doctor just a soldier with arthritis.
but most elderly patient are almost immobile having knee osteoarthritis pain, and as i am a medical student so i think if such patient swim without the supervision of a swimming instructor it may cause a trauma to him and can cause complete immobility of the knee joint due to tendonous or ligamentous stretch or injury.
so its better to advise such kind of patient to exercise on bicycle machine or a do the light leg raises type of light exercises.
upper body weighs should be done SITTING DOWN if you have knee osteo and are in the pain. You can do abs as long as your not doing something that effects the knees. I swim for cardio or use the bike in interval training for weight loss. Nutrition is key as well! Find anti-inflammatory foods and teas such as ginger
@coolakki147 I'm not the doctor but swimming offer resistance without using your full weight. Also, its helps with strength and weight management. Of course with any exercise, the endorphins help your mental well being which is great for pain management.

i have just discovered that jogging on thick flat grass works with good sneakers ... there is some bounce as where a hard surface would not work .
