I am gradually sorting through some of my ancient video tapes to log what is on them, and capturing some vintage clips whilst I do so.

Here is a clip from London Weekend Television recorded Saturday 1st December 1984. It is coming out of an episode of The A-Team (original UK broadcast of the third season episode 'Double Heat' - memorable as "the one where Face has a moustache"!) and an ad break before going into 'Tarby and Friends'.

Advertisements include:
* LWT promotion for 'Dempsey and Makepeace'
* 'Superman III'-licenced ad for Schweppes
* Braun Multipractic handblenders
* Old Spice
...then into an LWT promotion for 'The South Bank Show' about Malcolm MacLaren, '7 Days' over on Channel 4, the LWT evening line-up, and then into Tarby.

Note how on 'The A-Team', they always used to cut Stephen J. Cannell tag off, meanies.

And some of Tarby's jokes are very un-PC and probably wouldn't get on the air nowadays, especially in such a prime-time slot.

I am still going through all of my old tapes and uploading various clips, so check back regularly!

  • Why would the British people watch the A-Team?

  • Cos it's one of the best shows ever! =)

    It never took itself too seriously, unlike the daren't-break-a-smile tripe of today

  • In the HTV region, we used to get the Stephen J Cannell sting. I remember it well.

  • It may have been left on in different parts of the country - even first-run episodes were shown at different times in some regions.

    But don't get confused with the late '80s/1990s reruns, which left the sting on.

  • The Stephen J. Cannell tag began being shown about 3/4 through the UK run. At least, in all of the Southern-end-of-country regions.

    I love The A-Team, but Tarby is embarrasing.

  • HTV is Wales.

  • If ITV had decided to broadcast live abortions they couldn't have been less funny than this. I'm not Ben Elton or anything but really... Jews, Chinese, Japanese, gays, Everton fans.... Tarby had an unfunny quip for everyone in the world didn't he?

  • anyone know the music in the braun blender ad?

  • I was going to say how awful the comedy was, and while it is, on reflection its no worse than what itv is airing currently.

  • "there's no old rubbish as prizes in this show" *shot of vauxhall astra...

    i beg to differ

  • laugh

  • Odd that the schedule featured two back to back gameshows - the old IBA was far from fond of them. And I never knew Robert Kee hosted Seven Days - thought it was always Michael Charlton.

  • Dear god, he got paid for that??

    No wonder Ric Mayall and Ade Edmondson destroyed Tarby's career with their Filthy Rich and Catflap series.

  • Wow, Tarby was appalling - and the 'jokes' - dear Jesus...

    Incredibly the Jay Leno show here in the US has just about reached that level of cutting edge, 25 years after it was already out of date in the UK.

  • And on that bombshell...

  • I recall December 1984 very well, because that's when our black & white TV finally died...Don't ask.
