This Grade 1 student illustrates clearly a very simple way that we can help young students engage with the underlying morphological and graphemic structure of words. (Note: This video shows more emphasis on morphology. This link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJiglXCWgxo shows a more detailed video of Grade 1 and 2 students working word sums and a matrix for the morphological family of the base KNOW. That investigation uses word sums to target graphemic structure more precisely.)
In the current video we see that Sophie has been taught to use the symbols of the word sum. She uses plus signs to mark morphemic boundaries in written words. Not only do the students in Sofie's class write word sums, they do so while simultaneously announcing the names of letters in their morphemic groups. And then, as this film shows, students practice processing the morphological structure of words simply by spelling word sums out-loud using pauses where the plus signs were.
