  • Hello,

Can anyone tell me if scythes suitable for uneven terrain with thick, 'woody' clumps of grass? In another paddock, we have an' anti 4wd tractor' hill and we don't have livestock to mow the 6ft high grass either.

    Mortgaged, not Married, Australia

  • @claire88ity, in terms of the variety of material (from fine, short lawn grass to rank weeds and small green saplings) and diversity of terrain (steep slopes, ditches and areas full of obstacles), the scythe has no equal.

  • know any teachers on how to use a scythe or where i can find the scythe tool around Boise Idaho USA?

  • @TheScottybp, many farm supply stores and hardwares sell scythes if you want to get information on local experts and sources. We do sell scythes on our website, lehmans.com, and they can be shipped anywhere.

  • @kekawaka Not really. They are different tools and they both have their uses. I mow with an american scythe, and I'm 5 foot 5 and 125 pounds. Doesn't take much strength, you just have to have the technique for an american scythe. If you are mowing fields of grass the euro is faster, but the american scythe goes through stalky crap a lot better. American scythes are also cheaper and easier to maintain.

  • The American scythe blade is a stamped and case hardened pice of steel. It has high carbon temper with an edge that needs to be ground with a wheel. The European sycthe blade is mild steel and hammered to shape. It is hammered on an anvil to sharpen the blade.

This looks like a European blade. The snath might be an American model.

  • Horrors! This is NOT an American scythe! See the original post by user kaivido, who also posts some of the best European scythe instruction here on YouTube. You won't find 14-year-old girls wielding American scythes. The Austrian/European tool is much more ergonomic and efficient.

  • She knows how to do it!!!

  • Are you sure its American Style ? Snath looks more like Europe style and my guess the blade is Europe style.

  • Looks like good exercise for the abs and obliques.
