  • Cash changed around some of the words like "dust" to "dirt" and "crown of shit" to "crown of thorns" ...and removed the use of profanity which NIN originally used. Sevendust uses the same lyrics of that as Cash, along with the slower tempo and single instrument (guitar not piano like Reznor) So Sevendust's cover is that of Cash's plain and simple. It is a cover of a cover lol and regardless of who did it first, It's a timeless song!

  • Hurt was first written and performed by NIN on the album Downward Spiral in '94. It was later covered in '02 by Cash. It was big for Cash because it was the last song he played before his death, as well as acquiring alot of fans who never heard it from NIN simply because the two artiest perform for quite differant audiances. Reznor and Cash were actually friends and considered it an honor. Reznors take on the song was more suicidal while Cash's was more spiritual.

  • @TheRedDash That's Clint Lowery. He's normally doesn't sing, but he was perfect for this one. He has some acoustic based solo projects in case you are interested.

  • This version sucks, not enough pain

  • Who is the guy singing this? He has a awesome voice !

  • @MrAdrick1 Its the same tuning as Angels Son :) thats probably why

  • didnt he mess up at the end? instead of saying, "I would keep myself" he says "I will let you down" again

  • @andrewsurtees Sorry, but your statement that Hurt was one of NIN's "middling" songs is simply not true. It's been one of their flagship performances since its release in the mid-90's.

You're also wrong about All Along The Watchtower. Hendrix transformed folk into rock and created a totally different sound than what Dylan had originally produced. Conversely, Cash's cover of Hurt was pretty much the same as Reznor's, softened around the edges and presented in a different light.

  • @zsallen394

    cash covered rusty cage

    it was penned by soundgarden.

bloody hell thats why i hate fuckers doing covers, if the person who does the cover is more famous then the original singer, they automatically get credit for it

  • @SGTpigratfish It's a bit like Jimi Hendrix with "all along the watchtower". The original was great but everyone remembers the cover, and probably for good reason. In both cases a middling song in the original artists' repertoire was elevated by an inspired cover version.

Dylan and NIN fans generally prefer the originals, but for everyone else, great music is great whoever wrote it.

  • I enjoyed the cover song, but at the end when the singer said 'Johnny Cash ya'll, Johnny Cash', I couldn't quite decide whether or not I should have expected more (read: WHO WROTE IT, REALLY? CASH OR REZNOR?) from Sevendust.

I mean, I've come to expect it from the MTV crowd. They really think Johnny Cash wrote 'Hurt', not Trent Reznor.
