You're entirely right that a normal implementation probably would not turn it around; to do so you need to say `if (a[i] > a[i + 1]) { swap(a, i, i + 1); counter = 1; } else { counter++; }`, then at the end you can turn over `counter` elements: the swaps ultimately pick up the largest element and bring it to the end; if it stops short of the end then you know the remaining elements are in order.
