Technological advances in the media of communication, information, entertainment, and surveillance are always accompanied by a range of predictions about their benefits and dangers to democracy. What are the consequences for democracy in light of the convergence of new digital media with older forms of media distribution, like broadcasting and print? Jason Loviglio is director of UMBC's new Media and Communication program and associate professor of American studies. He is author of Radio's Intimate Public: Network Broadcasting and Mass-Mediated Democracy, and co-editor of Radio Reader: Essays in the Cultural History of Radio.

We have taken this idea that the very media that throws down our throats violence, sex, degradation, misogyny, etc etc is now the mantle piece to every home. Flat screens replaced fat screens so in turn minds already hindered by ongoing issues could now go from once fat, to even flatter. Daily I sit and watch as my people, sit in a sort of catatonic shock as the images and sounds pierce and destroy potentiality. The system wants you to have a masterpiece alright. Only it will dictate what's seen

The Schools have robbed us. The ritalin has taken the spark out. The men who control your Me/Dia know that any person with their own reality is a threat. For to let a bird fly is to not control it, and as humans, we love to keep caged birds. The whole structure now is coming together slowly. Read a book, but don't write one, watch a movie, but don't make one, hear a song, but don't sing your own. Me/Dia is you, 24/7/365 always yet we seem to be engrossed in the Never Ending World Sorrows. Go us!

The very essence of storytelling and going about taking a few mushrooms and what have you was perhaps their view of what we now would call TV. But on a more intuitive, psychedelic, and spiritual level. I see that now that we have stolen the land once owned by man of consciousness and handed it over to children of destruction we are now placed at the very situation we have now. This so called country of Allegiance is far from together, both individually and socially. I need no school to know this

Reality TV is now the choice of all folks for the individualistic attitude is, I have no reality, so why not walk someone else. I think before our time, our forefathers to this country robbed the earth of perhaps the most, and I think only, down to earth people every. Those people I speak of are Indians, Native Indians. It is sad now to see that the very things once considered strange in their community(they perfected communism in my eyes) was what drove us to take over their land. It's justICE

The sad thing about this chase for the Intelligence Quotient is it saps the Imagination Quality out of man. To put it more ingenuously, or ingeniously, the majority of all humans are now at a stage where they believe that A-Z and 0-9 is GOD. The sad part about that is if you take those same individuals and place them in a mirror and tell them to draw what they see they are so perplexed. These faculties of bettering the mind are slowly sucking the powers of our pineal gland to the point of nil...
