I agree that a lot of the charm of some of these is the coy looking away at the camera, sometimes with an innocent grin as if this were not their day job. I mean, the guy t 0:50 could be the guy who bagged your groceries this morning. Or the guys at 1:28 could be the two guys in line at the bank. The well muscled ones are less compelling for the same reason people complain about the modern day body builders-- too forced, to unnatural.

Modern bodybuilding signals a shift towards a new heterosexual aesthetic of the male form. Vintage bodybuilding pictures like these were primarily for the enjoyment of a gay audience. The models are beautified examples of young men coyly looking away from camera in a romantic naturalistic setting. Modern bodybuilding celebrates the masculine virtues of power and dominance, and even the ‘risk’ associated with abuse. Through movies and games, muscles = enhanced capacity to do violence.

Of this group I would guess Steve Reeves was the most successful. My favorites would have been John Hamill and Steve Wengryn from this video. They both were famous in the 1950s physique magazines and they helped me decide to work out and try to live a healthy life. I am glad now that I have kept up the exercises over the years. Nice video and music.

I think these are the bodies that women tend to like.that what I am going for.

@johnsammyanfal Modern bodybuilding celebrates the virtues of steroids, insulin and human growth hormone to produce grotesque caricatures of the male form.
