I wander around my alma mata (UCSD) and discuss whether the JET Program is the right choice for you.

A big thing JET looks for in the interview is a willingness to adapt to your new surroundings and an ability to roll with the punches. I get a lot of emails tho asking me about life in Japan and very specific needs. While being a JET in Japan is hardly like joining the Peace Corps in Africa, the simple fact is that Japan, for all its technological advances, is not America or the UK.
Many of you want to transplant your life in your home country into Japan - but to truly enjoy your time in Japan you have to be willing to give up things from your current lifestyle. I think the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

I also ask that if you're going to send me any kind of substantive PM, then please sign your name (at least your real first name). Thanks!

My campus visit schedule for October:
Tues the 13th - USD
Monday the 19th - UCSD
Wednesday the 21st - CSUSM (Cal State San Marcos)

I'll post another video in October with more details and info and specific times.

Thanks for watching!
-Jason

PS - The JET Application will be available online on October 5th in America. Let me know in a comment when it'll be available for other countries. Thanks!

  • so youre 39?

  • I'm 40 now.

  • What was the cost for you to call home and how often did you do so? is it feeable to call home once a day, once every few days etc?

  • I didn't call that often - maybe once a month, and relatives would call occasionally, altho some found the 16 hour time difference a challenge.

I used a long distance service to reduce the cost of international calls - you'll find out about these companies at Tokyo Orientation and at sites like jetsetjapan(dot)com.

I think I paid about .10cents per minute to the US.

Yahoo BB also offer a service.

Try to get your relatives on Skype - easiest and cheapest.

  • Come to UCI! I'm applying this year and would love if you would come to the JET info thing that is coming soon to our campus.

  • I'm sure some great folks will be headed to UCI - but not me this time. Check the LA consulate JET page for date and time.

  • My biggest concerns are logistical things such as getting internet access, a scooter or car, as foreigner with no Japanese documents and a language barrier.

Wow, those questions are funny :) A gym? Bring a pair of running shoes, I'm assuming the roads in Japan are still free. LOL.

  • I was thinking about doing either JET or Interac when I graduate from my UC. But I was doing TESOL first. :)

  • thanks! More details in a few weeks about the exact time and campus building for the UCSD visit

  • Good luck Jessica!

  • haha - you'd have to live with my parents... but OK... :D
