@caitlinjane92 Because it was shot in daylight and tinted blue to make it look like night. Early silent films hadn't the technology to shoot in the dark. Hope this helps. BTW - it's still very funny!

I'd seen clips of Chaplin before, but this is the first time I have watched him in a full movie. He is a genius! That bit with the rug and the door alone had me in stitches

I strongly advice you to watch his feature films. For example The Gold Rush, The Circus, City Lights, Modern Times.
