about Saghar Saddiqi from Urduweb
Saghar Siddiqui (ساغر صدیقی) was born in 1928 in Ambala (Punjab /British India). His real name was Muhammad Akhtar. He received his early education from Habib Hassan and young Akhtar got interested in Urdu poetry because of him. He started his career Nasir Hijazi as his pen name, but later he chose Saghar Siqddiqui. Even at age 16, he attended the mushairas regularly. He was also active in an Urdu majlis (society) formed for the advancement of Urdu literature by Dr. M. D. Tasir and Maulana Tajwar Najibabadi and attended its mushairas.
He was only 19 years old when he moved to Pakistan. In those days with his slim appearance, wearing pants and boski (yellow silky cloth) shirts, with curly hair, and reciting beautiful ghazals in a melodious voice, he became a huge success. But perhaps he was too sensitive for this cruel world. He had few tragic turns in his life, but his work made him one of the most papular poets in history of urdu poetry. He was one of those poets whose poetry being sung by many a singers and these songs and ghazals are one the famous in the music history. Saghar passed away in Lahore on 19 July 1974 at age 46 but his poetry made him one of the brightest stars of the poetry world.
