This was my first time to visit the VLA. I deliberately shot this in black & white to invoke a sense of remoteness and desolation. Some severe thunderstorm activity was nearby as you can see.

If anyone's interested, the array was in the "A" configuration which means the telescopes extend over the 21 kilometer (13 mile) length of each arm. This simulates a single dish that is 36 kilometers (22 miles) in diameter.

As other folks have noted, the films "2010" and "Contact" were filmed here. The visitor center features some additional information about the filming of "Contact" at the VLA.

  • Thanks. I used to think there were aliens out there but not anymore. I think with all the modern technology at our disposal we would've already had conclusive evidence that they're "out there somewhere."

  • cool music. you think there really are aliens out there?
