So, our good friend Bruno was about to turn 50, and his lady wife was about to throw a monster surprise party with family flying in from all over the planet. We were invited (of course) and realized we needed to do a very special birthday gift. Made, not bought. Unique and personal.

A pair of dressage cufflinks. In pewter. Hand-cast. The only pair in the world.

Easy?

Nope.

This turned into an epoch-spanning, epic, heroic tale of computers, high-temperature gases, molten metal, art, design and unreliable Dutch manufacturing - yes Shapeways, that means you! - all colliding over an increasingly tight deadline to deliver a truly unique birthday gift - the world's only set of CAD-designed, hand-cast, hand-finished, hand-polished, equestrian-themed lead-free pewter cufflinks.

There's just 2 of them in the whole world - don't lose one, eh? And don't sit on them either - pewter is notoriously soft ...

Anyway - here is a condensed version of that epic tale, illustrated musically by James Dean Bradfield's rather spiffing riffing.
