I've found that the closer you press to that metal things, the less pressure you need to use. Hope that helps.

I think my hands may be a bit small, (and I'm 31 :P) but these lessons are fantastic! Just picked up the guitar today! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Actually putting your pinky on the pickguard is what you would call anchoring and most teachers would stongly advise not to do it becouse it will cost you speed and fluency of picking on the long run... And if you've practiced anchoring for a while now it will be very hard to get rid the habit...

For the life of me I can't seem to figure out how much pressure to use on the frets, is there any guide I can read that might help me on figuring this out? All my notes seem to buzz unless I crush the string.

Admittedly, I haven't been trying this for very long, but I'm having such a problem getting my pinky down on the fourth fret. Is there a certain way I should be holding my thumb behind the neck of the guitar? My hand is so small and since my thumb is not double jointed, I just can't seem to reach far enough. Is there an alternative exercise if my finger just refuses to do this?
