On April 11, 2009, human rights advocates, students, academia, and members of the community came together for the 2nd Annual Chicago Conference on Human Rights: Tools to Bring Advocacy Home. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-9th) delivered the Keynote Address: "Advancing and Protecting Human Rights in Our Communities." Among the issues the Congresswoman spoke about in her address were poverty, healthcare, torture, immigration, and U.S. ratification of the CRC and CEDAW.
The Midwest Coalition for Human Rights, in partnership with a number of its member organizations, co-organized and co-sponsored the conference.

Jan Schakowsky has worked to achieve economic and social justice for all citizens throughout her career. She should be applauded for her strong support of womens rights, and encouraging national investments in healthcare, public education and housing, along with humane immigration reform. Great speech Congresswoman!
