"Lipstick on Your Collar" (1993) , UK Channel 4 TV mini-series , Written & Produced by Dennis Potter

Ewan McGregors first acting role, done 6 months from completing acting school, and he never looked back.

A tale of youthful lust, against a backdrop of the 1956 Suez crisis and national service. Interspersed with some great music from the start of the Rock & Roll era, which, for some reason the cast just start singing along to. Seems silly, and it is, but it works, and adds the right touch to the storyline, reflecting all those times when you wish life was a musical. (IMDb)

"I like the sort of music where "moon" don't rhyme with "June," and you're not up to your backside in bloody buttercups. Songs that aren't about your mum and dad. A bit rough. A beat that busts up the old way...the old stodge...the empire...and knowing your place, and "excuse me," and dressing up, and doing what you're told, and not once being asked! " (Private Hopper ''Ewan McGregor'') (IMDb)

  • I am Australian & remembered this TV series, I was in my late teens then. Fell in love with Ewan McGregor there & then! I would love to know if this series is available to purchase here, I have trawled the internet on Ebay, Amazon etc with no luck.

  • @cashcarter1 DVD finally released in October 2010 (after 17 years , 1993).

It can be purchased at Amazon UK.

  • Does anyone know where or how to see the entire mini series - not just clips of the songs

  • I've listened to a hell of lot of diverse music over the years, and Tony Williams, on this song, drew a line in the sand. You think you can sing? Then sing this....the crescendo from about 2.34 onwards is something to behold and gives me goosebumps without fail, every time. I can't see this being bettered & unless you can really blow, you dont want to try, as you'll come off 2nd best every time. Probably one of the greatest vocals on record and most people have probably never heard it....

  • Great song! . . . . wonderful show!

    Thanks for posting.

  • i love this so glad 4od had decided to play the whole episodes on here :)

  • WOW - how suggestive is the bit at 1.07 !! Cannot understand why we have never heard any more of Louise Germaine. She is gorgeous, sexy and could have been the English Marilyn Monroe.

  • i love old movies and the actresses and actors how into their characters they are like the women seem so entranced when they are acting and their eyes are captivating they are so visual just thought id let everyone here know :D

  • earth moving SONG , fantastic vocal , and what a gorgeous blonde.. I want her.. any idea of her location / age/ name ?

  • My sister got this DVD for my birthday last week. I saw it when it was first screened and I loved it . Roy Hudd played a great role as the creepy, sweaty organist who has a major obsession with Sylvia, and I just loved Hopper's daydreams in the office to pass the time.

  • @LipstickOYC Thank you for your help, fingers crossed! :)

  • Marylin Monroe - Andrew Marr, serenaded by Tony Williams' beyond believable top note.

  • Hey......dis ain't fiddy cent!
