He's not just speaking of fire and ice literally. If you dissect the poem, fire is desire and hate is ice. Other words that have possible double meanings:
both are equally as bad fire and ice and it doesnt matter how the world will end is what he's saying bc it all ends the same way... rather it be ice or fire.
Yours is almost the exact same rhythm I heard in my mind when I first read the poem. Most other readings don't hit that same nice note between a warning and a dark musing, but I like to hear it like that.
