  • No skills?! Au contraire! A huge part of the success of BOR was fantastic driving by James Spithill, brilliant tactics by John Kostecki, amazing sail trimming, and flawless boat handling. They made it look easy on a boat where it's anything but. BOR badly beat Alinghi in both starts, and flew two hulls consistently, while Alinghi kept dropping its windward hull into the water.

  • When Bertarelli finally handed the helm over to Loick Peyron in race #2, Alinghi was suddenly faster than BOR, and it was only the tactics of John Kostecki (especially his great lay line call) and a flawless tack that put BOR first at the weather mark. It might well have been a different outcome if Ed Baird and Loick Peyron had been driving Alinghi the entire event.

  • Cool technology, but: Goodbye America's Cup... You might as well start your virtual racing now: Say hello to computer controlled racing. So much for the human element and traditional sailing that used to uniquely define the AC... This race means nothing now.

  • With all due respect, America's Cup has always been as much about technology as about sailing. It's never been one design match racing. I personally look forward to better than ever events.

  • @JNavas2 I'd like to have the old America's Cup back... I'd prefer 'normal' boats rather than trimarans and catamarans. And when I say 'normal' it's not these new high-tech and 'all-about-the-speed' designs. This is not bad at all, but I just like the old America's Cup :)

  • This america's cup sucks. It's the worse ever, there were no chances for Alinghi winning the cup. No, there weren't. This AC were based on money, and the sindicate that had more, won.

  • 2013 America's Cup - sailing with crash helmets. It promises to be sailing like no other type of America's Cup sailing.

  • I'm happy the cup is back in the US, but this is a shame. A cup fought by attorneys and mostly won in the courts.

It would have been a lot more sporting, and in my eyes, gratifying, if this had been decided the "old fashioned way". Even if in the end USAOracle and Spithill/Ellison had failed to secure the cup.

Let's hope 2013 is better, and the GGYC has promised a multi-challenge, even if they will be racing cats instead of mono-hulls.

  • big ass boat @ 7:36

  • Can't mess with that wing baby, USA!

  • @FAFM2006 ...you mad?

  • Are you kidding? The technology is and has always been a part of sailing - not just the Cup, but sailing. For the doubters, please review the story of a little boat called, "America."

For those upset by the technology... go club your mate over the head and drag them back to the cave. The rest of us will use brawn combined with brain to evolve.

    Cheers!

  • @TheReycoco Give your dad a pat on the back - BMW Oracle and the wing were amazing machines, and did things that I never thought could be done with wind on the water. The wing is king as Brad Butterworth said.

  • Alinghi never had a chance in the regatta. It came down to pure hull speed and the trimaran with the wing simply out-sailed the cat downwind and on the broad reach. Yes, Alinghi did better on the reach in race two, first beat, but she had no chance with a downwind hull speed difference of three to four knots with her opponent. What was interesting was that everyone thought Alinghi would be the better vessel downwind.
