This is a City of Titusville, Florida, Department of Public Works, Solid Waste, Lodal automated side loader number 8402 . I must say, this driver was one of the friendliest I've ever met! He said that he really likes driving automated and let me film his truck collecting a few stops. He even let me film a shot of the hopper.

During the hopper shot, he was trying to explain to me that the packer will not move unless the arm is in motion. I guess this is a safety feature on this truck to prevent a driver from getting injured if they need to pull a cart or other object from the hopper.

UPDATE:
I found the driver again today (7-31-09), and asked him about the panel at 3:39, I think he called it a "sweeper panel." On the Lodal, this panel is there to keep material in the body when the packer is all the way to the rear of the truck, so that nothing falls behind the blade (not sure if you know, but the Lodal packer is like a large brick). This panel swings back and forth swinging up when the packer hits it and the panel rides along the top of the packer as a shield to aid during dumping or extra packing.

This is the first Lodal ASL I've ever seen in person. I took a few pictures of the driver so that he could get them from Flickr at his convenience.

Big THANK YOU to the driver on this one! I hope you can find the video and pics!

  • problem with side loaders is much space is taken between the cab and the hopper, all the stuff above the fron wheels where on a rear loader it would be used as, well space to store rubish. then you have the fairly big space taken by the arm itself.

  • Wow what a cumbersome arm on that truck you have to raise it up to drive down the street very slow and inefficient machine. They purchased a Lodal truck here and parked it because it would not hold much and was costly due to maintenance, and due to the fact that it got stuck everyday at the landfill since it was front wheel drive. They parked it and sold it ten years later, it only had 20k miles and sold for $2000 at the public auction, it cost $125,000 new.

  • ive seen these guys for a long time they really need a new automated vehicle system fully MSLs are faster

  • The Lodal EVO T-25 trucks we have here in Lafayette IN don't have that arrangement of the engine radiator behind the cab, but we also have the configuration with simultaneous refuse and recycling pickup. There are some rear-loading trucks operated one town over that are on Crane Carrier Corp (CCC) chassis that have the radiator behind the cab.

  • lodal FastTrak 90 on lodal EVO-T-25
